"I was lucky enough to squeeze in two European holidays this year – Berlin via London in June, and Paris in October. The main mission was language study, but it’s difficult to ignore the wealth of record stores and vinyl fairs on offer in these cities. Here’s some tracks I picked up, sorted by release date."
Catch Adi over the New Year break at these hotspots:
1 Jan - Lost Paradise Festival, Glenworth Valley
3 Jan - UNDR ctrl Summer Rooftop Series, Kings Cross Hotel w/ Tornado Wallace
El Coco – Cocomotion / 1977
One of the most epic disco tunes ever made, picked up for a steal at Betino’s in Paris. Vakula played this in full at The Spice Cellar last week!
Shakatak – Night Birds / 1982
Smooth 80’s business from Shakatak. Apparently these guys are still making music
I-Level – In The River (Dub Instrumental) / 1984
I’ve used this in a few other lists this year, found at the excellent L’International Records in Paris.
Cultural Vibe – Power (Power Dub II) / 1987
Checked this one out because of Cultural Vibe’s ‘Ma Foom Bey’ and sure enough, it’s a winner.
Bhundu Boys – Bye Bye Stembi / 1989
Unlikely combo of Reggae and House on the colourful Mango Records.
Daphne – When You Love Someone (Groove Instrumental) / 1993
Deep grooves on trusty Maxi Records.
Solution ft. Tafuri – Was That All It Was? / 1993
A big house cover of Jean Carne’s 1979 hit.
Downtown Loop – Keep Holding On / 1997
I was surprised to find this Simon Caldwell special for a few quid at London Record Fair. Check out the slightly naughty Luxury Service Recordings label art.
Romanthony – Bring U Up (Deep Vocal) / 2000
One of a thousand gems stored in Berlin’s famous Record Loft, which was conveniently located one block from where I was staying.
Extra Produktionen – The Mothership / 2002
Nice live instrumentation on this track, reissued on Permanent Vacation this year.
Super Value Special Edits 11 - A Side / 2010
Signature LTJ edit of C.L. Blast’s funky tune ‘I Wanna Get Down’ from 1980. That vocal!
