CC:DISCO! is the PBS FM radio presenter and all-round leading lady of disco, who we're delighted is flying up to join us from Melbourne at The Island LIVE on Friday night. We dig deep to find out about the Melbourne late night scene, her summer essentials and her shopping trip to New York where she met a Studio 54 original DJ.
UC: You hold it down every week for “Smoke And Mirrors” on PBS FM for two hours of Disco and House exploration. Past guests include Horse Meat Disco, Client Liaison and our Sydney favourite Adi Toohey, what’s your favourite part about interviewing new artists?
CC: Meeting the people behind some of your favourite music is pretty great, sometimes not that case but 99% of time its is. It’s great when you can connect with them on and off air as well because lets face it, in the end we are all just a bunch of music nerds. I love hearing about disaster gigs, nerves, and what they’re really passionate about. I really love finding the human side of them, that's what I like about interviews.
UC: As a veteran of the Melbourne club scene, what have been some of your favourite late night moments and what venues do you love to play?
CC: It was 7:30 in the morning a couple of weeks and I was looking around the club night I help run in Melbourne (LOST WEEKEND) and there was this moment of pure love (I was sober fyi) this crowd was so amazing and inclusive. When you look around and see so many different kinds of people gay, straight, trans, young, old, security guards, bar staff all dancing together as one at 7.30 in the morning to disco its actually a beautiful sight, late night venues in Melbourne really are something special. Places like Boney, Revolver, Lounge, Mercat, My aeon rule the late night scene. We are lucky to have these places, really lucky.
UC: Earlier in the year you headed of to NYC to spread your disco gospel. How does the club scene compare over there? Did you dig up any good vinyl?
CC: I sure did, I went to LA, Toronto, Chicago , NYC and did so much record shopping, its basically heaven for me over as the records are so cheap, what I would pay 30 bucks for here would be $3 over there. One store that blew me away was THE THING in NYC, I spent so long in there. It’s the real deal, its actually dusty as hell with records everywhere and no prices on them. Spent hours in there, made friends and managed to meet one of the original studio 54 DJs who told me stories about Larry Levan and picked out all these great records for me. I pretty much ditched all my clothes and came back with 80 new records and a really sore back.
UC: Recently you did an hour-long mix for Thump, how do you go about getting the song selection started?
CC: I always like to start of my mixes pretty slow and always includes lots different genres as that’s me as a DJ. I had been playing that mix out in the clubs for a while. I just loved those combination of songs together, so was stoked Thump asked me make a mix as I knew all of these songs would work and were perfect for Thump. And of course had to finish it with something random like I do with every mix I post online.
UC: You have the ability to totally command a dance floor with your signature disco, what are your favourite tracks to really get turn the party up a few notches?
Shirley Lites – Heat you up (Melt you down)
This one is a serious staple and over the years it never fails. Classic Westend records banger
Soichi Torarda – Sunshower (Larry Levan remix)
I’m pretty sure I’ve played this to death, but nothing sounds as good in life as when that synth and bass come in, watching people’s faces when starts is gold, they look so confused, stunned then look at you with this huge smile. Its one really under-rated track and it sounds incredible on a good sound system.
Ebony Brothers – Brighten up your night (Rahaan edit)
In 2015 this has been a real CC classic for me, when the moment is there in a big club this track is a bloody winner on the Df
UC: Ok, you’ve washed up on a deserted island and the universe will send you 3 things. What are you going to ask for?
- Unlimited pho
- Sound system with my music
- Unlimited Whiskey
UC: What are your 3 hot tips for this summer?
- Jameson with a dash of dry
- Be nice to people on the dance floor and never judge them for having a good time
- Support your local Djs
