Steele Bonus is a genuine vinyl veteran and one of our highly anticipated guests at The Cliff Dive on Sunday night for Strictly Vinyl 004. We had a word in his ear ahead of his closing set this weekend...
SV: How many records do you have in your collection?
SB: Maybe close to 3000. But I’m definitely more into quality than quantity. I’m always trying to cull but it gets tricky sometimes because you get attached to them.
SV: Oldest record in your collection?
SB: Not sure to be honest, something from the late 60’s? My music taste generally doesn't go back further than that.
SV: Newest record in your collection?
SB: I got a new one in the mail today. A split release called ‘Mogul 3’ featuring different artists from around Dusseldorf on the label Themes For Great Cities. I’m into it.
SV: Most expensive record in your collection?
SB: Not sure, probably either an LP called ‘Let The Music Guide You’ by Cleo McNett or an Italian 45 by a group called Zombi. Both would probably fetch upwards of $500 these days. However I’ve always been more interested in the music itself then the material value of these things.
SV: Which record would you NEVER sell?
SB: ‘Angela - Got A Little Love’ never leaves my record bag.
SV: What’s the sexiest cover in the collection?
SB: When you start getting into the 70s disco era all the covers are pretty sexy. But I’ll go for a classic – Country Life by Roxy Music
SV: Best hidden gem you never knew you had?
SB: ‘Hokis Pokis – Can’t Wait For Love’. I discovered this tune on the B-side of one of my favorite 45’s the other day. It’s pretty good!
SV: Where do you buy your records from?
SB: Everywhere I can. I’m pretty much always looking.
SV: What’s your fave store in Sydney?
SB: Revolve in Erskineville. Listen Up in Darlinghurst is also a good place to hang on a Saturday.
SV: What’s on your slipmatt’s at home?
SB: Nothing exciting. They’re just Technics ones
