As our 1st Birthday draws closer, we caught up with the superstar behind Tear Council, Matt Van Schie (Van She, Du Tonc) to find out what he's listening to right now, and what he has in store for us tonight...
UC: Describe your on stage set up and style?
MVS: It's a 4 piece band; guitar, bass, centre vocals, backing vocals and drums. And a magic computer with effects. Our style is Nu Romantic :)
UC: How did you celebrate your most recent birthday?
MVS: I honestly don't remember. Can I get a tissue for my issue?
UC: When is the last time you volunteered/donated to charity/did a favour for a mate?
MVS: I taught yoga at a special needs house for a couple of months last year. Also helping my youngest brother move house last week was some seriously hardcore charity.
UC: What is the most Undr ctrl and the most out of ctrl thing in your life right now?
MVS: Undr ctrl - my booking agent, out of ctrl - the sands of time.
UC: Who and what is Tear Council?
MVS: Tear Council is my project but I have a key writing and production partner - Michael Di Francesco. Sometimes he even plays in the band!
UC: You played your first live show in June at the Personal Best Records x Vivid Live showcase. How did it feel getting up on stage with the band for the first time (proper)?
MVS: It felt exhilarating. Although we probably should have rehearsed more than twice. I'm definitely looking forward to more live gigs :)
UC: The video for your first single ‘Anywhere’ was named Rage ‘Indie Clip Of Week’, how did you come up with the concept for the clip?
MVS: Miska Mandic, the director, came up with the concept and it felt like it suited the track. Who doesn't like the film noir vibe?
UC: Your second single ‘My Car’ came out very recently and has a really nice 80s groove to it. Who is influencing/inspiring your sound right now?
MVS: The Reels, Suicide, Alexander O'Neal, Zoot Woman, Bob Welch, Telex.
UC: What’s the sentiment behind your ‘For the Heart’ mixtape?
MVS: It's just a mixtape of our favourite songs. i.e. the heart... I think the next one will be Mixtape For The Drive... Or Mixtape For The Disco-tech... I'm still deciding.
UC: You’ve toured the world with a very impressive roster of artists as part of Van She, Du Tonc and your own solo project. Who would you most like to tour with next, and what can we expect for the rest of 2015?
MVS: In Oz I'd like to tour with Client Liaison. Overseas it would be cool to tour with Midnight to Monaco or Neon Indian or Toro Y Moi or The Chromatics... This year I'll do a small national DJ tour for Tear Council in August / September, then I'll plop out an EP in November. I'll also release a new Du Tonc Single in September :)
