Third Floor has taken the Australian electronic music scene by storm this year after releasing his brilliant audio visual EP 'Dream State'. We had the pleasure of debuting his live show at our UNDR Ctrl 2nd Birthday earlier this year and now in collaboration with Yeahsure. Aaron Bannie takes us through the creation of his Third Floor persona; the man, the mask and the music.
You can see Third Floor live at the first edition of The Island LIVE next Friday 7th October alongside Nina Las Vega, Yahtzel and Stoney Road DJs. Check out our latest interview with Aaron ahead of next weekend.
UC: Your top 3 track predictions for the summer anthem are…
Third Floor – Can’t Do This Alone
Rose featuring Rachel K Collier - Craving
Fabich, Ferdinand Weber & Saint Wknd - All Of My Love
UC: Favourite thing about Australian club culture?
What I love about the Australian club culture is the wonderful sense of community and family. Given our current climate, especially in Sydney, it’s humbling to see that our music and club scene are all on the same page striving to keep Australian music alive and urging everyone to success.
UC: This year you’ve been most excited about…
This year I’ve been most excited about bringing this project to life. Since it’s inception/release in February this year, it’s been a beautiful journey. Just being able to put something I created into the universe has been a great feeling. I’m really looking forward to the release my new track in a couple of weeks “Can’t Do This Alone”. Not going to lie, I’m pretty excited about the Island Live too!
UC: Favourite summer vacation destination is…
I’ve been lucky enough to travel extensively however I’d say right on my current door step, Bondi Beach. Can’t beat it.
UC: If you could have written any song in the world it would have been…
Would have to be my favourite song of all time, Massive Attack “Teardrop”. The perfect mix of emotive and down tempo.
UC: First thing you look for when you’re putting together a mix
How emotive the song is, and how I can build and tell a story in the mix. It doesn’t matter who the artist is, I rarely search songs by an artist. I listen to specific genres, listen to those songs and songs recommended in similar vein. You might hear one or two songs that are deemed popular in my mix, however a lot are from new or undiscovered artists.
UC: Tell us more about your mask, is it important you remain anonymous and what is the story behind it?
I wanted to create something fresh, unique and standalone and separate to my everyday 'Aaron Bannie’ persona. By creating anonymity and this new identity, the mask allows me to express different parts of my personality that I usually wouldn’t show. Check my out Third Floor Facebook page for my recent doco about the man behind the mask.
UC: Lastly, HOW WAS BURNING MAN??!!
I could chat about this experience for days. It’s hands down the single most beautiful, all immersive experience I’ve ever taken part in. All I can say is that you have to experience this! What you see across social media in terms of the art and music pictures doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Burning Man is all about. Go find out for yourself, it will open your eyes and heart.
